Amazon Fire HD 10 Review

I was testing the latest Amazon Fire HD 10 Plus tablet for the past few days. It began rolling out to consumers earlier this week. It begins at $179.99, a bit higher than half the price of the newbie iPad.

This is Amazon’s most high-end tablet and comprises some additional features such as enhanced RAM and wireless charging option. These upgrades make it a good choice than the $149.99 regular Fire HD 10.

Amazon’s tablet business doesn’t produce a notable amount of the company’s revenues. They’re appealing as they’re cost-effective and allow you to play shows, movies, music, and read books. They’re great if that’s all you wanted from a tablet. Though, I think most users who can wait and save a bit longer will learn they can do much more with an iPad.

Here are the things you should learn about the latest Fire HD 10 Plus.

Price and Availability

Amazon introduced two designs of its famous Fire HD 10 device in past April 2021. Plus, it also launched its Kids Pro Fire tablets this year. The tablets were available for pre-booking and rolled out to buyers at the end of May 2021.

The two adult tablets introduced in late April 2021 were the Fire HD 10 and Fire HD 10 Plus. Both followed a similar launch strategy implemented with the Fire HD 8 and HD 8 Plus. Both the tablets arrive in 32GB and 64GB storage configurations and begin at $150 and $180. The Kids tablets are available at $100 for the Fire 7 Kids Pro. And the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro costs $140 and $200 for the Fire HD 10 Kids Pro.

What Did I Like About It?

This tablet is a nice option for people who just want a tablet for gaming, read books, or stream Netflix. This is perfect for streaming Amazon Prime video or music from services like Amazon Music, Pandora, Spotify, and others.

It’s light-weighted and gives a nice 10.1-inch display that’s bright, crisp, and colorful. The tablet is made of plastic. Though, the soft-touch finishing prevents it feels cheap. This doesn’t comprise metal or any other higher-end design features as an iPad does.

I found that the stereo speakers are fantastic and play audio from both sides of the tablet. This way, the sound gets balanced while streaming movies in landscape mode. They’re good for listening to music. I liked playing classical during reading books at night and get loud enough audio.

Amazon enhanced its RAM to 4GB this year, so it became a bit faster when browsing applications simultaneously. It didn’t feel lagging to me, even when I opened up Netflix alongside browsing the news.

Another benefit you won’t find in an iPad: it has a microSD card slot for extending the storage. This way, you can download more images, movies, and audio and play when you’re offline. I suggest purchasing the cheapest 32GB model tablet for this purpose, instead of the 64GB model. At the same time, microSD cards are inexpensive and can be readily popped into the side.

What Could Be Improve?

I’ve already highlighted the durability of the Fire HD 10. However, it would be great if it had some sort of official dust and water protection. There should be something to safeguard it from accidental splashes, spills, or occasional Cheeto dust.

I would like to get a Bluetooth keyboard case along with a pointing device or trackpad. I choose the typing experience to that on the Lenovo Chromebook Duet. The Lenovo’s keyboard is quite amazing in terms of usability due to that handy trackpad and kickstand,

I am not saying that I want to click more pictures with the Fire HD 10. Although, I can expect an improvement in the image processing and sensor in the next edition. Yes, this 2021 version comprises a much-enhanced sensor to the 2019 version. The Fire HD 10 has a 5MP camera which is better than the previous edition but not great. Well, I also want access to work-related apps such as slack or zoom.

Should You Buy it?

If you merely want to stream Netflix on the couch or browse Amazon’s services, then you can go for it. But with this tablet, you can’t access useful apps like Slack or Zoom or anything Google-powered.

I guess that’s the people whom Amazon is targeting. It is fine for the people who only want a tablet to watch movies and read books. But I suggest saving some more money and getting the $149.99 model. It has a bit less RAM yet, functions well, and available in three more colors.

But if you need a tablet with a way better browser, premium design, and more apps, save $329 for the iPad. I understand it is more expensive, but it also gives you a better performance.
